EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN EXTRAORDINARILY FRESH AND SUPERBLY CENTERED MINT NEVER HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE $1.00 WASHINGTON ISSUE.

The experimental Bluish Paper issue of 1909 was created as part of an effort to combat paper shrinkage, which resulted in a high rate of spoilage and off-center stamps in the earlier 1908 issue, to which this $1.00 Washington belongs. Many values of the set, particularly the high values, are difficult to find in centered Mint N.H. condition.

EXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A BEAUTIFUL PLATE NUMBER BLOCK OF THE $1.00 WASHINGTON.

Excluding the Bluish Paper issue, this is one of the rarest of the Washington-Franklin plate blocks. As noted in lot 753, the Bureau experienced difficulty with paper shrinkage while printing the 1908 Issue, and the Bluish Paper experiments of 1909 were part of an effort to correct the problem. The 1908 high-denomination stamps are difficult to find well-centered, and plate blocks are extremely rare in higher grades.
