5c 1847 Issue singles, including shades and cancels:
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
31 image5c Deep Orange Brown (1b). Huge margins all around including part of sheet margin at right, intense shade and rich color, strong impression, cancelled by clear and mostly complete strike of black "U.S. Express Mail N.Y./N.York/May 2" route agent's circular datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS THE UNIQUE 1847 STAMP CANCELLED BY THE U.S. EXPRESS MAIL MARKING IN BLACK, WHICH REPRESENTS A DEMONETIZED USAGE OF THE 1847 ISSUE.

The 1847 stamps on mail sent via the New York-Boston "Express Mail" route were usually cancelled by a grid -- only rarely were they cancelled solely by the route agent's datestamp. The example offered here is even more significant, because the U.S. Express Mail datestamp is struck in black. Black ink was used after August 1851 (according to recorded covers -- see Chronicle 68), which places this stamp in the post-demonetization period.

Ex Waterhouse, Haas and "Elite" sale. With 1989 and 2000 P.F. certificates. (Image)

32 image5c Brown (1). Full to large margins except just clear at top left, pretty shade, cancelled by perfect strike of rectangular grid of squares from Wilkes Barre Pa.

VERY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE WILKES-BARRE RECTANGULAR GRID OF SQUARES CANCELLATION.

Aside from the unique cover, there are only two 5c 1847 stamps recorded with the distinctive Wilkes Barre grid.

Ex Stollnitz. With 1996 P.F. certificate (Image)

33 image5c Dark Brown (1a). Full even margins, dark shade and rich color, early proof-like impression, neat strike of green dotted-grid cancellation used only at Tallahassee Fla. during the 1847 period

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A REMARKABLE STAMP WITH ONE OF THE FEW GREEN FANCY CANCELLATIONS USED DURING THE 1847 ISSUE PERIOD.

Philip Wall records two off-cover 5c 1847's with this cancel -- the other has a crease.

Ex Emerson and Haas. With 1991 P.F. certificate. (Image)

34 image5c Red Brown (1). Large even margins, attractive shade, cancelled by well-struck blue Hollow Star of Trenton N.J., frames Franklin's face, faint manuscript offset on back barely shows thru, small corner creases at bottom

VERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE AND DESIRABLE FANCY CANCELLATION ON THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE.

A comparable example of the Trenton Star on a 5c 1847 (also with faint crease) realized $5,750 in Christie's 1993 Ishikawa sale. Ex Caspary, Haas (our Sale 418, where illustrated on front cover), Grunin and "Elite". With 1990 P.F. certificate. (Image)

38 image5c Red Brown (1). Large margins, cancelled by sharp strike of red "Housatonic Railroad 5" route agent's handstamp

EXTREMELY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE HOUSATONIC RAILROAD CANCELLATION ON THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE. A GREAT RARITY.

Perhaps a dozen Housatonic Railroad covers are known with the 5c 1847, and even fewer off-cover examples are known. It is unlikely that a finer stamp exists with this marking.

Ex Rust and Grunin. With 1989 P.F. certificate (Image)

800.00 2,500.00
39 image5c Brown (1). Large margins, late printing shade and impression, tied by black "Philadelphia Pa. May 11" (1852 or later) circular datestamp on small blue piece

EXTREMELY FINE AND RARE DEMONETIZED USE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 FROM PHILADELPHIA.

The 1847 Issue was demonetized when the new 1851 Issue was released on July 1, however, based on surviving examples, major post offices evidently tolerated sporadic late use of 1847 stamps, at least for a period of time. This piece shows the 5c cancelled by the Philadelphia datestamp in black, a color ink used only after 1851. The earliest possible date of use is May 11, 1852, long after demonetization.
