180		10c Green, Ty. III (33). Plate 1, unused (no gum), perfectly centered with phenomenally wide margins all around, rich color and detailed impression EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE 10-CENT 1857 PERFORATED STAMPS FROM PLATE 1 ARE NOTORIOUSLY DIFFICULT TO FIND WELL-CENTERED. THIS TYPE III STAMP -- FRAMED BY WIDE EVEN MARGINS ON ALL FOUR SIDES -- IS ONE OF THE CHOICEST WE HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED. Remaining supplies of 10c stamps produced from Plate 1 (Types I thru IV, Scott 31-34) were perforated in 1857. They were followed by stamps printed from Plate 2 (all Type V, Scott 35), all of which were perforated. Toppan Carpenter's inexperience with its new perforating machine resulted in stamps with perforations frequently cutting into the design. The grade Extremely Fine generally indicates a well-centered example, but the stamp offered here transcends the usual grade. The margin width is extraordinary by any measure, and relative to the 1857 Issue it is nothing less than miraculous.
