334		2c Carmine, Perf 10 at Top or Bottom (554d). Block of four, center horizontal row perf 10, rich color, neat "New York N.Y." precancel, centered to bottom right FINE AND RARE. THIS BLOCK OF FOUR, WITH ALL STAMPS CONTAINING THE PERF 10 VARIETY, IS PROBABLY UNIQUE. A WONDERFUL SHOWPIECE. The Perf 10 variety occurs only on a few stamps in a sheet affected by the error. During maintenance and repair of the perforating machine, some of the pins of one perforating wheel slipped into 10 gauge rather than the normal 11 gauge. Vertical strip of three, large margins on three sides, in at bottom of bottom stamp, neat "San Francisco California" precancel, some slight wrinkling VERY FINE AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE. THIS IS THE LARGER OF THE TWO KNOWN IMPERFORATE MULTIPLES. AN OUTSTANDING SHOWPIECE OF WHAT IS PROBABLY THE RAREST TWENTIETH CENTURY IMPERFORATE ERROR. In his book United States Stamps 1922-26, Gary Griffith outlines the history of the the strip of three offered here and the horizontal pair, which are the only known examples of this variety (no singles are recorded). Both multiples bear the San Francisco precancel. The pair, ex Lilly, is almost completely separated by scissors and was discovered in 1923 or 1924 affixed to a package containing law books. Even in faulty condition, the pair realized $1,700 in 1968. The strip of three offered here was first discovered around 1982, and it is essentially sound (some wrinkles noted on certificate) With 1983 P.F. certificate. Inverted "Portland Oregon" precancel, wide margins at sides showing that the pair was imperforate vertically (not just between the stamps), deep rich color, left stamp thin spot and small tear at top left VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THIS IS THE UNIQUE LISTING PAIR OF THE 5-CENT ROOSEVELT IMPERFORATE VERTICALLY. A GREAT 20TH CENTURY RARITY. In his book United States Stamps 1922-26, Gary Griffith gives us what little information is known about this pair. Griffith states that the pair was first documented in 1935, and that Johl notes that one pair is known. The Scott Catalogue first listed the variety in 1936. The current Scott Catalogue lists the item as "Horizontal Pair, Imperforate Between" and does not give a catalogue value.
