datestamp on large part of folded cover to Sheffield, England,

stampONE OF ONLY FOUR RECORDED USAGES OF THE PROVIDENCE PROVISIONAL STAMP TO A FOREIGN DESTINATION, AND THE ONLY ONE TIED BY THE PROVIDENCE CIRCULAR DATESTAMP. FROM A NEW DISCOVERY. The discovery of this large part of a cover brings the total recorded foreign usages of the Providence provisional stamp to four. There are three covers: 1) tied by ms. on cover to London, Sheffield correspondence, ex Pope, 2) tied by ms. on cover dated Apr. 26 to London, England, Reynolds correspondence, and 3) cancelled by ms. on folded cover to Sheffield, England, filing crease affecting stamp, address partially erased. The piece offered here is notable also for the fact that the stamp is tied by the red Providence datestamp. Less than a dozen covers are known with the provisional tied by the red Providence datestamp. Excluding the New York postmaster's stamp, which served a more general use than any other provisional, only five postmasters' provisional usages to foreign countries have been recorded: the four listed above for Providence and one Baltimore 10c cover. Scott Retail for a stamp on cover tied by datestamp is $20,000.00 (Image) |
