1870-88 Bank Note Issues (National Printing): continued...
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
232 og image90c Carmine (155). Full original gum, lightly hinged, gorgeous rich color and proof-like impression on bright white paper, wide and even margins all around

EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE ISSUE -- ARGUABLY THE FINEST OF ALL.

As we remarked in the description of the 15c 1870 (lot 230), the rarity of the 1870 Grilled Issue in superb original-gum condition overshadows its ungrilled counterpart. The 90c 1870 Ungrilled National is not only overshadowed by the 90c Grill, collectors are misled by the availability of Scott 166, the 1873 Continental printing. The difference in shades is distinct, yet collectors have a tendency to under-rate the 1870 National printing. Most original-gum examples are poorly centered. This example is remarkable for its centering, incredibly fresh gum and intense color. It is everything a 90c National should be, without any of the usual problems. Of the five or six that can be considered Extremely Fine, this is, in our opinion, the finest.
