at center from wax sealEXTREMELY FINE AND CHOICE. AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BALTIMORE PROVISIONAL ON WHITE PAPER. VERY FEW OF THE KNOWN COVERS HAVE THE STAMP CANCELLED ONLY BY A HANDSTAMP.
As noted in the Scott Catalogue footnote to 3X1-3X4, the Baltimore provisional stamps on white paper followed the printing on bluish paper.

sides and large part of frameline at bottom, pen cancel which is lighter
than usual, tied by ms. "5", additional manuscript "due 5" marking on 1846
blue folded letter to Northampton N.Y., light strike of red "Baltimore
Md. Apr. 22" circular datestamp with matching "Paid", traces of
original gum around top edge of stamp reinforce the tieVERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING TIED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BUCHANAN BALTIMORE PROVISIONAL ON BLUISH PAPER. ONE OF PERHAPS THREE KNOWN EXAMPLES USED WITH THE RED BALTIMORE DATESTAMP.
The Baltimore provisionals were printed first on bluish and then on white paper (the Scott catalogue reverses the chronological order). Most examples are known used with the blue Baltimore datestamp, a second usage of the same date is recorded also struck in red (Hayes census No. 15). The third, dated April 3, 1846, is offered in the following lot.

complete at top, cancelled by four neat pen strokes with one just tying the
stamp on Apr. 3, 1846 folded letter to New York, lightly struck red
"Baltimore Md. Apr. 6" circular datestamp, matching "Paid" and "5" in
circle, couple light file folds, one crease thru stampVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A CHOICE TIED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BUCHANAN PROVISIONAL ON BLUISH PAPER -- ONLY THREE RECORDED WITH RED BALTIMORE DATESTAMP.
As noted in the previous lot description, there are three Baltimore provisional cover postmarked in red, all April 1846 dates.

provisional, sharp blue "Baltimore Md. May 17" (1846) circular datestamp on
entire addressed to Miss Susan Julia Mayer in Reading Pa., small stain spot
at right, missing small part of backflap from openingVERY FINE. ONLY SIX EXAMPLES OF THE 5-CENT RED ON MANILA ENVELOPE ARE RECORDED IN THE HAYES CENSUS.
