EXTREMELY FINE AND CHOICE. AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BALTIMORE PROVISIONAL ON WHITE PAPER. VERY FEW OF THE KNOWN COVERS HAVE THE STAMP CANCELLED ONLY BY A HANDSTAMP.

As noted in the Scott Catalogue footnote to 3X1-3X4, the Baltimore provisional stamps on white paper followed the printing on bluish paper.

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING TIED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BUCHANAN BALTIMORE PROVISIONAL ON BLUISH PAPER. ONE OF PERHAPS THREE KNOWN EXAMPLES USED WITH THE RED BALTIMORE DATESTAMP.

The Baltimore provisionals were printed first on bluish and then on white paper (the Scott catalogue reverses the chronological order). Most examples are known used with the blue Baltimore datestamp, a second usage of the same date is recorded also struck in red (Hayes census No. 15). The third, dated April 3, 1846, is offered in the following lot.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A CHOICE TIED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BUCHANAN PROVISIONAL ON BLUISH PAPER -- ONLY THREE RECORDED WITH RED BALTIMORE DATESTAMP.

As noted in the previous lot description, there are three Baltimore provisional cover postmarked in red, all April 1846 dates.
