First setting, position showing upturned pearl at left and inverted period after "Post", full to large margins, faint horizontal pre-use crease, tied by pen strokes across each corner, used with 5c Red Brown (1), margins touching or slightly in on three sides, tied by several strikes of red grid cancel, matching "5" rate handstamp on blue folded letter datelined Charleston, Dec. 17, 1850, to John L. Manning at Columbia S.C. -- then a state senator, elected governor of South Carolina in 1852 -- from an educator and promoter of "Southern Education" and the "Abolition of Abolition Text Books" in Southern schools VERY FINE. ONE OF FIVE RECORDED 1847 COVERS WITH A CHARLESTON CARRIER STAMP -- EACH AN HONOUR'S ISSUE -- THREE OF WHICH ARE 5-CENT COMBINATIONS. A MAGNIFICENT COVER FOR THE 1847 COLLECTOR OR CARRIER SPECIALIST ALIKE. There are two 10c 1847 covers recorded with the oval Honour's stamp (4LB1 and 4LB2) and three covers with the 5c 1847 used in combination with Honour's 4LB7 or4LB8a. The other two 5c covers are double-rate frankings. This is the only single franking, and the absence of the Charleston post office datestamp suggests that it might have been urgently prepared for the train trip to Columbia. From the Hall collection.
