MAILS SUSPENDED. Partly
clear oval handstamp on 3c Red Star Die entire to Waldo, Missouri,
"Knoxville Iowa Aug. 24" (1861) circular datestamp, lightly cleaned, Fine,
Waldo lies in Southern Missouri where pro-Confederate activity caused
suspension of mail exchange, this is a very rare example of the Mails
Suspended marking used on a letter not addressed to a Confederate State (Image) |

cancelled in ms., matching ms. "Randolph ?? July 17" postmark at lower left
corner, sender's routing "Via Shreveport", "New Orleans La. Aug. 8"
double-circle datestamp on back (where "Cannot Be Forwarded" marking was
applied), reduced at left, faint lightened stain, Fine appearance, rare
attempted trans-Mississippi mailing, probably post-war before service was

Tex., 3c Rose (65), tear at right, cancelled by target, matching
"Tunkhannock Pa. Jul. 8" circular datestamp, "New Orleans La. Aug. 1"
double-circle datestamp on back (where "Cannot Be Forwarded" handstamp was
applied), pencil "due 25c" indicating express fee was paid for
delivery to Texas, Very Fine, extremely rare, probably a post-war usage
before Federal mail service was fully restored

3c Dull Red (26) used on McKnight Guards, Co. L, 28th Regt. Penn. Vols.
Capt. James Barr Patriotic cover to Hammonton N.J., chaplain's
endorsement, the demonetized stamp was not recognized and marked "X" in ms.
with two strikes of "Due 3" -- regular soldier's letter rate without
penalty -- Very Fine, unusual "Old Stamps" usage
