EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED INBOUND BLOCKADE-RUN COVERS WITH THE ADDERLEY FORWARDER'S HANDSTAMP. AN OUTSTANDING AND VERY RARE USAGE.

This mail was carried on the blockade-runner Herald (I), from Nassau on June 30, arriving at Charleston on July 3, 1862. Adderley & Co. was the Nassau affiliate of Fraser, Trenholm & Co., who owned and operated blockade runners. (Image)

Va., envelope style is typical of French stationery, carried by Cunarder Arabia from Liverpool (Jan. 23, 1864) to Halifax (Feb. 4), then by branch line Alpha (Feb. 5) to St. Georges, Bermuda (Feb. 10), then from Bermuda by the blockade-runner Advance, leaving Feb. 13 and arriving in Wilmington on Feb. 18, opening tears along top and reduced at right, still Fine, a significant blockade-run usage (Image) E. 2,000-3,000 1,200.00

VERY FINE. ONLY THREE BLOCKADE-RUN COVERS ARE REPORTED WITH AN EMBOSSED FORWARDER'S MARKING -- ALL WERE APPLIED BY CHAMBERS & COMPANY IN NASSAU, BAHAMAS.

This cover originated in Liverpool and was carried on the Cunarder China on Mar. 12, 1864, arriving in New York on Mar. 23. From New York it was carried on the Cunard branch line to Nassau. It was part of the mail transported to Wilmington on the blockade-runner Syren, departing Apr. 10 and arriving on Apr. 13.

Embossed markings applied by forwarders are very rare on examples of bloackade-run mail. The other two reported examples are on covers arriving at Wilmington in May and July 1864, both are Chambers & Co. ovals.
