308 c imageEarly Grove Miss. Mar. 23 (1861) -- "No. 2 Registered Registry fee 5cts.". Mostly clear circular datestamp ties 3c Dull Red (26), creased, on orange cover to Jackson Miss., registry markings in manuscript, docketing indicates $25 enclosed

EXTREMELY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED REGISTERED COVER FROM A POST OFFICE IN THE CONFEDERATE STATES, WHICH WAS POSSIBLE ONLY DURING THE PERIOD PRIOR TO JUNE 1, 1861.

After the Confederate postal system commenced operation on June 1, 1861, there was never any provision for registered letters, valuables were usually entrusted to express companies and couriers. However, prior to June 1, post offices in the Confederate States could still transmit registered mail, although the great rarity of registered covers from this period suggests that the service saw limited use. The Dietz catalogue lists one registered usage from Wetumpka in Alabama (as an independent state) and one registered Confederate usage, the cover from Early Grove, Mississippi, which is offered here (illustrated in Dietz on page 12).

Ex Birkinbine. (Image)
