Postmasters' Provisionals (Memphis to Nashville):
Lot Sym. Lot Description Est/Cat Realized
409 c imageMemphis Tenn., 5c Red (56X2). Huge bottom sheet margin, ample at sides and just barely in at top, tied by "Memphis Ten." circular datestamp on orange cover to Champagnolle Ark., "Adams Southern Express" imprint at top, slightly reduced at right but not affecting stamp

VERY FINE. A REMARKABLE USE OF THE MEMPHIS POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL ON AN ADAMS SOUTHERN EXPRESS ADVERTISING COVER. ACCOMPANIED BY AN ORIGINAL LETTER AND PRINTED NOTICE RELATED TO THE DIFFICULTIES OF MAIL COMMUNICATION BETWEEN THE NORTH AND SOUTH.

Enclosed in this cover are two items. One is a letter to the addressee, Miss Hattie Billings, datelined "Office Southern Ex. Co. Memphis, Sept. 15/61" from H. Borden, the express agent in Memphis. It informs Miss Billings that "Communication with the North ceased entirely about one month since, and I am directed by this company to open and return all letters sent us." Borden offers to send a letter received from her to the North in care of a "fellow Statesman (New Jersey) who goes North tommorrow."

The other item is a printed notice from Henry B. Plant, datelined Augusta, July 6, 1861, announcing the purchase of Adams's southern offices and the formation of the Southern Express Company with the board of directors listed.

This trio of items forms a spectacular and historic exhibit page chronicling the Southern Express Company's role in transmitting correspondence across the lines of war.
