SENT BACK TO ENGLAND/WITHOUT A
REASON/FOR NON-DELIVERY. Three-line handstamp in frame clearly struck
in red on 1p entire from Great Britain to Breckinridge Tex., oval cancel
and "Bewdley Au 21 61" circular datestamp on back, "3 Cents" debit
handstamp, "Boston Sep. 3 A.Pkt. 24" circular debit datestamp, "Boston
Mass. Sep. 10" backstamp, long and interesting note on back in the sender's
hand: "Nov. 30 1862, this was returned to my hands, on it stamped 'sent
back to Engd. without a reason for non-delivery.' Our friends here are all
well. Kent came from Edinburgh to Bewdley a few days ago. I was much struck
with his likeness to his father. He left earlier than he first intended. I
will pay the postage & see then if it will find you. Can such unjust
tyranny prevail in your land of freedom, as to sanction the opening of
private letters & if the Boston office do so, is it sanctioned by
authority? Our cotton spinners are badly off. America is persisting in a
mad course. Shall be glad to hear from you. CPB" -- the message clearly
indicates that the sender remailed this envelope, but it is unclear if it
was sent to the Confederacy thru the blockade -- a Very Fine and
fascinating usage (Image) |
