Endorsed "W. E. Johnson, Prisoner of War, Fort Pulaski" on buff
cover to Liberty Hill S.C., "Charleston S.C. Jan. 8, 1865" circular
datestamp and "10" due handstamp, red ms. "Ex" examiner's mark, from one
of the 600 Confederate prisoners moved to Morris Island by Federal forces,
relocated to Fort Pulaski after the stalemate, prisoners on both sides
were held in open barracks under direct shelling from opposing forces, Very
Fine and choice, a fascinating and well-known story of the war (Image) |
