Knoxville Tenn., 5c Brick Red
on Grayish Laid (47X1). Ample margins at top and bottom, framelines at
sides just shaved, two tiny nicks at left, rich color, tied by
"Knoxville Ten. Mar. 11, 186[2]" circular datestamp on small cover to
Brig. Gen. Daniel Ruggles at Corinth Miss., reduced at topVERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE KNOXVILLE PROVISIONAL TIED BY THE LARGE SANS-SERIF CIRCULAR DATESTAMP, WHICH WAS FIRST USED IN 1862. THIS IS THE LATEST KNOWN USAGE OF THE KNOXVILLE PROVISIONAL STAMP. The large circle with sans-serif type was not used in 1861, based on our survey of Knoxville covers (including stampless, provisionals and general issues). The date is difficult to read, but appears to be "MAR" and is certainly 1862. Our records and the Levi records contain no more than ten 47X1/47X2 covers with the stamp tied by a handstamped marking. This cover is the only one with the large sans-serif datestamp, and it is the latest recorded use of the Knoxville provisional (a Jan. 1862 cover precedes it). Ex Brown and Gallagher. (Image) |

Knoxville Tenn., 5c Blue entire
(47XU1). Uncancelled as usual, addressed to Arcadia Tenn. with sender's
routing "via Bristol" and instructions to Arcadia postmaster "Mr.
Fain will please send this over to Esq. (P?)aine's by the first
opportunity", additional sender's note on inside of backflap "I have
concluded to try Mr. Fain's Post Office a while. I will have the Whig
changed & perhaps the Register, too -- the former certain", making
reference to the Arcadia post office operated by the Fain family and to two
newspapers, the Whig and Register, an additional note is
written on back, evidently by the person who was instructed to take the
letter from the Arcadia post office to the addressee -- "Dear Friend,
how do you do this morning, Farewell, I must think of starting home
soon" -- cleaned to remove stain at top, Extremely Fine appearance,
this entire (on white or buff) is extremely rare, and the mailing
instructions on this example are of special significance considering the
difficulties in transporting mail within Tennessee at this time (Image) |

Lenoir N.C., 5c Blue & Orange
(49X1). Framelines all around, usual small margins but clear on three
sides and touching at bottom, tied by bold dark blue "Lenoir N.C. Jun. 6"
(1862) circular datestamp on buff cover to Cleveland Tenn., backflap
removedEXTREMELY FINE AND FRESH. ONE OF SIX RECORDED COVERS WITH THE LENOIR PROVISIONAL TIED BY A HANDSTAMPED MARKING. Based on sworn testimony from James Harper and his son, G. W. F. Harper, the Lenoir provisional was impressed from a pear-wood device carved by Postmaster Harper's son in the summer of 1861 (see Crown book, pp. 172-178, 651-652). Approximately 29 covers bearing the Lenoir adhesive stamp are known, including six on which the stamp is tied by a handstamped marking, listed here in date order (circular datestamp ties stamp unless otherwise noted): 1) Oct. 17, 1861, to Dr. James M. Abernethy, Yorktown Va., ex Caspary, Muzzy, Boker, 2) Oct. 22, 1861 (sometimes quoted as Oct. 20 or 21), to Mrs. S. H. Wiley, Bridgewater N.C., ex Stonewall, 3) Oct. 24, 1861, to Mary H. Hendey, Salisbury N.C., stamp cut out and reattached, ex Seybold, photo in Crown book, 4) Nov. 3, 1861, stamp reported tied by "Paid" in circle, to Van Teague, Salisbury N.C., reported in Crown book but unconfirmed, 5) Apr. 12, 1862, stamp tied by "Paid" in circle, to R. L. Patterson, Salem N.C., ex Emerson, Caspary, Haas, and 6) Jun. 6, 1862, to J. H. Gant, Cleveland Tenn., the cover offered here, ex Solomon, Haas. This cover is addressed to Cleveland, Tennessee, which lies less than 300 miles from Lenoir. Eleven Lenoir provisional covers are reported used in 1862, thru June 17. On July 1, 1862, the 5c rate under 500 miles was dropped, and the basic letter rate became 10c. Ex Solomon and Haas. (Image) |
