1c Blue, Ty. II-III-IIIA
(20-22). Positions 4-7/14-17L4, top sheet margin block of eight, top
four stamps are Type II from Plate 4 -- showing complete design at
top, bottom stamps are Types IIIa-II-IIIa-IIIa, fresh original gum, a
few small h.r., intense Plate 4 shade and impression, some perf separations
sensibly reinforced, Position 16 has a faint creaseA FINE AND IMPRESSIVE PLATE 4 MULTIPLE WITH A RARE COMBINATION OF TYPES, INCLUDING FOUR OF THE DESIRABLE TOP-ROW TYPE II WITH FULL DESIGN AT TOP.
The top row stamps from Plate 4 are the best examples of Type II, showing the complete design at the top. Similarly, the bottom row of Plate 4 furnished Type Ia/Ic stamps, showing the complete bottom part of the design. Perforated Type II stamps from Plate 4 are very scarce, and this is believed to be the largest Type II Plate 4 multiple after the complete sheet (ex Ishikawa). (Image)

Large part o.g., remarkably well-centered, deep rich colorEXTREMELY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED TYPE IV STAMP.
The Plate 1 Late sheets on hand in 1857 were perforated on the new equipment, but the spacing between subjects and Toppan Carpenter's generally poor perforating skills resulted in the majority being off center. Examples of Scott 23 with original gum (even if slightly disturbed) and this grade of centering are rare.

Recut once at T. and once at B., well-centered and clearly showing each
recut, red carrier cancelEXTREMELY FINE. A CHOICE 1-CENT TYPE IV PERFORATED WITH RED CARRIER CANCEL.
As noted in the previous lot, the 1c perforated stamps from Plate 1 Late were poorly perforated. Centered examples -- particularly with colored cancellation -- are rare. (Image)
