1849", route directions "Via San Antonio" indicating that the
letter was to travel south to San Antonio, then north to Fort Leavenworth,
which may follow a regular military express route, excellent letter content
including references to Indians, Mexicans, hardships etc. -- "...tell
him also that is its absolutely necessary to learn the Spanish language if
he intends to go to California -- which if as mean and degraded as this
country, Africa I consider a Paradise to it."FRESH AND EXTREMELY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS SOCORRO, NEW MEXICO, MARKING. AN OUTSTANDING WESTERN PIONEER USAGE. A similar cover from the Smith-Younger correspondence is known, but it does not have the Socorro marking and was routed via Santa Fe. The red Fort Leavenworth postmark is rare in its own right.
