"6" rate on cover to San Jose Cal., attempted use of demonetized 1847 Issue, a manuscript mark on stamp has been removed and the cover has been expertly cleaned and improved along edges to improve appearance

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A REMARKABLE LATE USAGE OF THE 1847 ISSUE IN AN ATTEMPT TO PREPAY RATE TO CALIFORNIA FROM ILLINOIS.

15 c San Francisco 6 July 1 (1851) -- First Day of 6c Rate. Lightly inked but clearly struck red integral-rate circular datestamp and "Paid" on 1851 folded letter to Belchertown Mass., fresh and Very Fine, carried on PMSS Panama, the first mail under new 6c rate $ 1,100
17 c 3c Dull Red (11). Clear to large margins, tied by one of two bold strikes of "Campbelltown N.Y. Oct. 29" circular datestamp on 3c Red Nesbitt entire to Sacramento Cal., part of backflap intact, edge wear, still Very Fine $ 220

21 c 3c Dull Red (11). Ample margins to touching, tied by rim of datestamp with mostly full strike of "Wilkes Barre Pa. Sep. 19" circular datestamp and "Paid 3" in oval on buff cover to Mokelumne Hill Cal., forwarded to Oakland with "Mokelumne Hill Cal. Oct. 27" small circular datestamp, unusual rating -- evidently the 3c short payment of 6c rate was rated as 5c due, rather than the full 10c unpaid rate, and upon forwarding an additional 5c rate was charged, for a total of 10c -- minor wrinkles, Very Fine, fascinating cover, ex Clifford and Haas $ 525

Vertical strip of three, large margins to slightly in, top stamp creased, tied by "San Francisco Cal. 16 Aug." circular datestamp on brown cover to Boston, two strikes of woodcut "Due 5" handstamp -- 5c due for 3c short payment of double rate -- forwarded from Boston with red datestamp and "Paid", worn and minor cover faults, still Fine, unusual usage $ 150
