VERY FINE. THE EARLIEST RECORDED USE OF ANY OF THE 1869 RE-ISSUES AND THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF AN 1869 RE-ISSUE ON THE 1875 CENTENNIAL ENTIRE.

Although it is generally accepted among students that the 1875 Special Printings were created with the Centennial observance in mind, there is no mention of this in any official Post Office publications. The cover offered here brings these events together. It is the only such combination on record and the earliest recorded use of the 1869 Pictorial Re-issue.

EXTREMELY FINE GEM STAMP AND CHOICE COVER. THE ONLY SINGLE FRANKING AMONG THE THREE RECORDED 2-CENT 1869 RE-ISSUE COVERS.

The rate to Canada, which was based on the domestic letter rate, was lowered to 2c on Oct. 1, 1883. This is not a printed matter usage, as indicated in the 1869 PRA census.

The 10c plus 10c postage on this cover prepays the double 5c UPU rate and 10c registry fee. This cover was not among the three recorded in the 1869 PRA census. (Image)
