Well-centered, used with two flanking 2c Orange, USIR (R15)
internal-revenue stamps, attempted illegal use as postage, tied by
large 11-bar grids, red "New York Mar. 8" circular datestamp on 1870 blue
folded letter to Paris, France, the revenue stamps were not
recognized as prepayment and the letter was sent via British Open Mail at
the 4c rate, appropriate accountancy handstamps and Calais transit, London
backstamp (Mar. 18, 1870), file folds, minor small edge tears and wear,
faint gum toning on and around stamps' margins, Very Fine, only a few 1869
covers with attempted illegal use of revenues are known to us -- this is
one of the most outstanding of its kind -- with 1994 P.F. certificate (Image) |

2c Brown, 6c Ultramarine
(113, 115). Tied by segmented cork cancels on legal-size 1870 cover
to Grand Hotel, Menton, France (French Alps), red "New York Mar. 12"
circular datestamp and blue crayon "2" for double rate, "GB/40c"
accountancy handstamp, Calais transit, red London backstamp, ms. "3" for
triple French rate and corresponding "15" decimes due marking -- the U.S.
rate was based on -1/2 ounce increments, while the French was based on -1/4
ounce (7.5 grams) increments -- receiving backstamps, some mends to
backflap and lightly cleaned, still Fine, an extremely rare usage,
double-rate 4c British Open Mail covers are rare, only three with a 6c 1869
are recorded in the 1869 PRA census
