showing enough of design to satisfy prepayment, tied by "New-York Oct. 20
1:30 PM" circular datestamp and circle of wedges cancel on light pink
Wells, Fargo & Co. lithographed cover to Lebanon N.H., the reason for using
this security device is explained by the "Held for Postage" straightline
(crossed out), which indicates that another stamp was originally affixed
and removed or fell off -- the missing postage must have especially galled
Wells, Fargo & Co. employees whose business was based on security, and the
foolproof collar was a way to show their diminished faith in postal
employees -- a fascinating conversation piece, with 1993 P.F. certificate
