Adams' City Express Post (New York NY):
  Lot Lot Description
A 435 imageAdams' City Express Post, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Buff (2L2). Original gum, mostly large to huge margins except just clear at upper right, fine impression on fresh paper

VERY FINE. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THIS EXTREMELY RARE STAMP.

A survey of auction catalogues produced no more than a half-dozen examples of this stamp, including four or five covers bearing uncancelled stamps. We could locate no other original-gum copy of 2L2.

Illustrated in Patton book (p. 7). Ex Lilly. With 1998 P.F. certificate. Scott values all of the Adams' rarities at $400 to $500 each, off cover. (Image)

E. 3,000-4,000
A 436 imageAdams' City Express Post, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Buff (2L2). Large margins all around, cancelled by swirling lines in pencil -- lightened to enhance appearance, but the impression appears thru stamp and inside of cover -- used on lady's small embossed cover to East Boston Mass., red "New-York 5 cts Apr. 22" integral-rate circular datestamp, reduced at right into postmark, bottom edge split along embossing at right

VERY FINE STAMP AND AN EXTREMELY RARE COVER. PROBABLY NO MORE THAN A HALF-DOZEN EXAMPLES OF THE ADAMS 2-CENT ON BUFF EXIST. THIS IS BELIEVED TO BE THE ONLY TIED STAMP ON COVER.

We have located four or five covers bearing the Adams 2L2 stamp, of which only this example is cancelled.

E. 5,000-7,500
A 437 imageAdams' City Express Post, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Gray (2L4). Irregular margins, large on two sides, into bottom left corner, ms. "X" cancel, tied by black "New-York 5 cts Apr. 12" circular datestamp on buff cover to Willsborough N.Y., blue "Williamsburg N.Y. Apr. 15" circular datestamp, ms. "Missent & ford.", slight creasing and wear around edges

FINE. AN ASTONISHING COVER, ON WHICH THE RARE CITY EXPRESS POST STAMP WITH "ADAMS" DELETED IS TIED BY THE POST OFFICE DATESTAMP.

Of the few covers known with the Adams 2L4 stamp, this is believed to be the only one with the stamp actually tied by a cancellation of any type. In this instance, the New York 5c unpaid rate datestamp was struck over the local stamp.
