VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE "S" CARRIER STAMP IS EXTREMELY RARE, WITH ONLY FOUR OR FIVE BELIEVED TO EXIST ON OR OFF COVER.

Although the initialled carrier stamps do not exactly agree with the carriers' names, except for "JJ", this "S" stamp may have been designated for G. B. Schock. There are two reported covers (June 6 and June 16, 1849) and possibly one or two other off-cover stamps.

Ex Caspary and Boker. Realized Sfr. 850 in 1973 Robson Lowe sale (current Scott value $750.00) (Image)

A 348 imageU.S.P.O., Philadelphia Pa., 1c Black on Rose, "S" (7LB2). Two full margins at right and bottom, uncancelled, used on brown cover to College of St. James Md., blue "Philada. Pa. Jun. 16/5" integral-rate circular datestamp, ms. "1849" year date

VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO EXAMPLES OF THE "S" CARRIER STAMP USED ON COVER. AN IMPORTANT CARRIER RARITY.

The initial "S" is believed to designate carrier G. B. Schock. In addition to the two known covers, there at least one (probably two or three) off-cover stamps.

Ex Worthington (cost code on back), Caspary and Middendorf. (Image)

E. 4,000-5,000
