Honour's City Post, Charleston
S.C., (2c) Black on Bluish (4LB13). Horizontal pair, large margins to
ample at bottom left, right stamp has ms. "J. H. H. Jr." initials of
John H. Honour Jr., tiny trace of thin in right stampEXTREMELY FINE.
THE ONLY RECORDED MULTIPLE OF HONOUR'S BORDER-OF-LINKS STAMP (SCOTT
4LB13). The border-of-links carrier stamp issued by Honour in late
1857 is extremely scarce. Although its nominal $200 Scott value would
suggest otherwise, evidence of 4LB13's rarity is the small number of
examples contained in the Caspary, Boker, Hessel and Golden collections.
This pair is the only known multiple, used or unused. Ex Caspary and
Boker. Unlisted in Scott. (Image) |

Honour's City Post, Charleston
S.C., (2c) Black on Bluish (4LB13). Large margins to just clear in
places, tied by tail of ms. "2", used with 3c Dull Red (26), tied by
"Charleston S.C. May 19, 1858" circular datestamp on small cover to
Maysville S.C.VERY FINE. PROBABLY FEWER THAN A DOZEN GENUINE COVERS
EXIST WITH THE BORDER-OF-LINKS STAMP ISSUED BY HONOUR'S POST IN 1857-58.
ONLY FIVE COVERS ARE KNOWN TO US WITH 4LB13 TIED IN COMBINATION WITH THE
3-CENT 1851-57 ISSUE. As described in the previous lot, the Honour's
4LB13 stamp is much rarer than its Scott value would suggest. A survey of
auction catalogues and photo files produced only eleven covers, about half
of which had no tying cancellation. Five covers in our records have 3c
1851-57 stamps and the 4LB13 tied. Ex Hessel
