EXTREMELY FINE. ONE OF FOUR RECORDED COVERS WITH A COMBINATION OF THE RARE HONOUR'S "PENNY POST" STAMP AND 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE. THIS IS ONE OF TWO KNOWN COVERS WITH THE "PENNY POST" STAMP TIED BY THE CHARLESTON DATESTAMP.

The Honour's stamp bearing the legend "Penny Post" is extremely rare. Our records contain only 11 genuine covers, including 4 with the 3c 1851, one on a U10 entire, 5 singles used alone (one to Ireland), and one pair on a Valentine cover. Of the 11, only 5 have a cancellation that ties the carrier stamp. Four of the tied examples are 3c 1851 or U10 combinations, and one is a cover to Ireland (carrier fee prepaid, transatlantic postage collect). Only this cover and the cover to Ireland have a Charleston datestamp tying the carrier stamp. The reason is that the carrier stamp was usually affixed at left, however, the positioning of the stamps at right on this cover and the cover to Ireland resulted in the purely-coincidental tying cancellation.

Ex Caspary and Boker, notation on back "2/23/93 Scott Auction EJS" (1893 Scott auction). (Image)

E. 7,500-10,000

"2", used with 3c Dull Red (11), also with three large margins and touched at top, tied by "Charleston S.C. Paid Nov. 2" circular datestamp on small 1855 folded letter to Sumterville S.C.

VERY FINE. ONE OF THREE RECORDED COVERS WITH A FULLY-TIED COMBINATION OF THE RARE HONOUR'S "PENNY POST" STAMP AND 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE.

The Honour's "Penny Post" stamp is extremely rare, with only 11 recorded genuine covers (details provided in previous lot description), including 5 on which the carrier is tied. This cover is one of three 4LB11 and 3c 1851 combinations with both stamps tied.
