S.C., 2c Black on Bluish (4LB8). Positions 7-8 and 9, horizontal pair
and single (from position below left stamp in pair), ms. cancel in pencil,
used on large lace Valentine cover to local addressee, stamps have small
faults, addressee's name changed slightlyVERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONLY
THREE VALENTINES BEARING A MULTIPLE OF THE HONOUR'S 4LB8 STAMP ARE
RECORDED. AN OUTSTANDING CARRIER USAGE. The Philatelic Foundation
files contain a photograph of a Valentine cover to L. A. Mills, Line St.,
Charleston, bearing a vertical strip of three (Positions 5/7/9) with sheet

fee probably required for special service, very few multiples are known, ex

at upper left, ms. cancel, tied by blue "Clarksville Ga. Aug. 15"
circular datestamp, matching blue grid ties 3c Dull Red (11), margins clear
to in at bottom, paying 3c postage plus carrier fee from the post office to
addressee on cover to Charleston S.C. street address, routed by
sender "Care Honours City Post", few minor toned spotsVERY
FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE HONOUR'S STAMP USED FROM CLARKSVILLE
TO PREPAY THE CARRIER FEE IN CHARLESTON. We record only three covers
to Charleston with carrier stamps accepted as prepayment. An Honour's cover
bearing Scott 4LB13 from Aiken S.C. was sold in our Sale 773 (Mar. 26,
1996) for $3,750. The third cover, from Raleigh N.C. with a Kingman's stamp
(name erased), is offered in lot 1263 in this sale. Ex Hessel.

slightly in at left, tied by ms. cancel, used with 3c Brownish Carmine
(11), clear to ample margins, ms. cross-hatch cancel, blue "Wilmington &
Raleigh Railroad" route agent's circular datestamp with ms. "Feby 17"
(1852) date on blue folded letter to Boston, file folds, one thru carrier
stampFINE AND VERY RARE USE OF CARRIER STAMP ON MAIL GIVEN TO THE
ROUTE AGENT OF THE WILMINGTON & RALEIGH RAILROAD. According to Henry
Abt's album write-up, Charles Remele (who once owned this cover) speculated
that the Charleston carrier department somehow ensured that this letter
would reach the southern terminus of the Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad at
Wilmington, 150 miles from Charleston, perhaps via a coastal
