  Lot Lot Description
1500 Swarts' City Dispatch Post, New York N.Y., Stamp Study Collection. Mounted collection including some used singles, two No. 136L4 blocks of 25 (with P.F. certificates), 136L14 sheets of 25 and numerous reprint sheets, generally Fine-Very Fine E. 500-750
1501 imageSwarts' City Dispatch Post, New York N.Y., (1c) Engraved Reproductions. Three in Black, each cancelled by "Paid" straightline in red, three in Red, each cancelled by "Paid" in black, all but one on piece, these enigmatic engraved stamps are discussed by Perry in The Chatham Square Post Office on page 29, Perry believed they were too skillfully executed to be counterfeits of relatively common stamps (Image) E. 200-300
A 1502 imageSwarts' City Dispatch Post, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Gray Blue Wove, Bouton's, "Swarts" at Top (136L13). Ample to large margins, deep shade, tied by Swarts' red "Paid" on piece dated Feb. 3, 1849, a very early date following Swarts' acquisition of Bouton's City Dispatch Post (earliest is Jan. 29, 1849), Very Fine -- this is actually the first Swarts issue (although listed as the last in Scott), and its rarity is generally underrated by collectors who tend to lump all of the Swarts issues together (Caspary had two off cover and only one cover) -- illustrated on title page of Perry's 1941 monograph on the Chatham Square Post Office, ex Abt (Image) E. 750-1,000
A 1503 imageSwarts' City Dispatch Post, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Gray Blue Wove, Bouton's, "Swarts" at Top (136L13). Large margins to just touching at top left, bold "Swarts" overprint, tied by red "Paid", second strike and matching "Post Office, Swarts, Chatham Square" oval handstamp on embossed Valentine cover addressed in blue to local street address, some faint stains

VERY FINE. THE BOUTON'S STAMP WITH MANUSCRIPT OVERPRINT IS THE FIRST SWARTS ISSUE AND IS EXTREMELY RARE. THERE ARE PERHAPS TEN COVERS EXTANT, DATED IN LATE JANUARY AND EARLY FEBRUARY 1849, SOON AFTER SWARTS' ACQUISITION OF BOUTON'S CITY DISPATCH POST.

In our cursory survey of auction sales and other sources, we counted eight 136L13 covers. Allowing for covers not known to us, it is unlikely that more than ten covers exist.

Two large margins, touched at top and right, uncancelled, tied by filing crease thru stamp, red "New-York 5 cts. 22 Mar." integral-rate circular datestamp on greenish 1849 folded letter to New Haven, Fine, extremely rare -- eight covers located by us and possibly ten covers exist in total (Image) E. 750-1,000
