McIntire's City Express Post,
New York N.Y., 2c Pink (99L1). Irregular margins cutting in at right
and touching in other spots, tied by large "McIntire's City Express
Post Paid" oval handstamp on Nov. 15, 1859 printed notice to local street
address, some minor gum stainsFINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE
McINTIRE'S CITY EXPRESS POST STAMP TIED ON COVER. ONLY ONE OR TWO OTHER
GENUINELY-TIED USAGES EXIST. William H. McIntire established and
operated this post between 1857 and 1860, based on recorded covers and city
directory listings reported by Elliott Perry. McIntire's 2c stamp is quite
scarce and oddly so, considering the duration of the post. Examples on
covers are generally uncancelled. Two tied usages have cancellations not
found on any other covers and for this reason are suspect. This cover and
one other with a damaged 99L1 have the correct company oval handstamp tying
the stamp. These two may be the only genuinely tied usages. (Image) |

McINTIRE'S POST 2 Maiden
Lane. Straightline handstamp clearly struck with "Collect" oval in
conjunction with blue "Wells, Fargo & Cos. Express S.Frco. 5 Mar."
double-circle datestamp and "Paid" in oval on Mar. 3, 1860 folded letter
from San Francisco to New York City street address, endorsed "p Golden
Gate", somewhat fragile and worn at folds, still Very Fine with
markings clearly struck, several recorded covers provide evidence that
McIntire and Wells Fargo had an arrangement whereby express letters from
California would be delivered locally in New York City -- this cover was
sold in the 1956 Caspary sale with a 99L1 stamp affixed at lower left, but
it was judged not to have originated and has been removed (Image) |
