Hill's Post, Boston Mass., 1c
Black on Rose (81L1). Three large margins, obviously torn from the
upper right corner of the sheet, clean-cut margins at top and right,
irregular margins at left and bottom (but only touching circle),
tied by red "Boston 5 cts. 15 Dec." integral-rate circular datestamp
on 1849 blue folded letter to Providence R.I., file fold thru stamp,
reinforced split in natural foldover at rightVERY FINE APPEARANCE.
THE ONLY TIED EXAMPLE AMONG THE SEVEN RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE RARE
HILL'S POST STAMP OF BOSTON. Hill's Post was operated by Oliver B.
Hill. Our records contain seven covers bearing Hill's Post stamp. These are
listed here in chronological order (dates refer to Boston circular
datestamp): 1) Sep. 5 (1849), uncancelled, to Rev. R. G. Dennis, Grafton
Mass., Sloane's records, 2) Sep. 28 (1849), octagonal margins, pen
cancelled, to Edson Hill, Manchester N.H., with endorsement initialled
"OBH", the cover offered in lot 1177, 3) Oct. 18 (1849), uncancelled, to
Samuel Davis Jr. & Co., Cincinnati, ex Chapman, Caspary, Boker and Lilly,
4) Oct. 18 (1849), uncancelled, same sender as last, to Oglesby, Barnetz &
Co., Middletown O., ex Ackerman, Emerson, Knapp and Schenck, 5) Dec. 15
(1849), stamp tied by datestamp, to Seth Paddleford & Co., Providence R.I.,
the cover offered here, 6) Jan. 31 (1850), uncancelled, to Seth Paddleford
& Co., Providence R.I., same correspondence as last, Costales files, and 7)
unknown date and correspondence (first name is William), part photo in
auction catalogue clipping, Costales file. The Hill's Post stamp was
left uncancelled, with one exception (number 2 above, offered in the
following lot), and it is a pure serendipity that the red Boston datestamp
ties the corner of the 81L1 adhesive to this cover.

Hill's Post, Boston Mass., 1c
Black on Rose (81L1). Octagonal margins well clear of circle, neat ms.
"#" cancel (not tied), used on folded cover addressed to "Edson Hill
(Firm of Hill & Berry), Manchester, N. Hampshire" with sender's
notation "Paid" and directions "PM Please deliver and oblige
OBH", almost certainly the writing and initials of Oliver B. Hill,
proprietor of the post, red "Boston 5 cts. 28 Sep." integral-rate circular
datestamp and matching "Paid" handstamp, slight bleed-thru from writing,
couple eroded spots in ink at topVERY FINE. ONE OF SEVEN RECORDED
COVERS BEARING HILL'S POST STAMP. ONLY THIS EXAMPLE IS CANCELLED, AND IT
APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN SENT BY OLIVER B. HILL WITH HIS INITIALLED NOTATION AT
LOWER LEFT. As detailed in the description for lot 1176, there are
seven recorded Hill's Post 81L1 covers, dating from Sep. 5, 1849, through
Jan. 31, 1850. Only one cover has the stamp tied (offered in lot 1176),
however, it was never cancelled by Hill, but was coincidentally tied by the
Boston datestamp. This cover is the only one with a cancelled stamp. The
notation at lower left is initialled "OBH", and the addressee is Edson
Hill, of the firm Hill & Berry. The initials match the name of the post's
proprietor, Oliver B. Hill, and this was almost certainly sent by Hill
himself. The portion of the letter on the other side appears to be text for
a report of the F.W.B. Church of Manchester, including blanks where certain
statistics are to appear. The letter is not signed.
