  127 Baltimore Md., 1857-63 Horse & Rider Issue, Study Collection. 109 stamps, including 1LB8 block of four and a few pairs, a fascinating study collection -- the kind that starts collectors in an entirely new area -- filled with plate varieties ("Sent" and Short Rays), shades, reconstructed settings, cancellations, pieces in combination with 3c 1857's, many mounted on pages from the Kelly and Abt collections with their notes, condition varies and faults must be expected, overall Fine-Very Fine, the Horse & Rider stamps have so much to offer philatelists, and this study collection is the ideal nucleus for expansion -- Scott value exceeds $5,000.00 E. 1,500-2,000

A 131 imageBaltimore Md., 1c Red (1LB9). Block of six, Positions 3-4/5-6/7-8 (Pos. 7 "SENT"), original gum, large to huge margins, some gum translucency (soaks into crease at upper right, but the paper is not torn as it appears)

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE RED HORSE & RIDER STAMP.

Although several panes of the Black stamp were discovered years ago, the Red Horse & Rider stamp has no representation of multiples other than this block. Illustrated in Kelly series (CCP, Vol. 51, No. 6, p. 348). Unlisted in Scott. (Image)
