Hale & Co., (6c) Blue, Street
Address Omitted (75L5). Cut to shape, uncancelled, red "Forwarded by
Hale & Co. from Baltimore" oval handstamp struck on front and back of
April 28, 1845 folded letter to New York City, this is the earliest
of the series of transaction reports from the Brandreth correspondence, the
sender writes "I now send by the express mail, because I get ten stamps
for 50 cts. which is worth saving, if they are delivered promptly." --
Hale & Co. commenced service in Baltimore on April 24, 1845, four days
before this letter was sent (the whole Hale letter-express operation was
closed down on June 30th), the additional handstamp on back and absence of
a cancel on the adhesive indicate that Hale's Baltimore agent was
unfamiliar with procedures for cancelling mail -- Very Fine, ex Kelly (Image) |

letter written by Hale's Baltimore Agent, William Edwards, to the president
