VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED COVERS WITH THE "WE" AGENT'S HANDSTAMP OF HALE'S BALTIMORE OFFICE. AN IMPORTANT ARTIFACT OF HALE'S INDEPENDENT MAIL SERVICE.

imageHale & Co., (6c) Blue, Street Address Omitted (75L5). Cut to shape, tied by red Collect box, matching "Forwarded by Hale & Co. Baltimore" oval handstamp on June 9, 1845 folded letter to New York City, two slightly soiled file folds, still Very Fine, extremely rare use of Hale & Co. stamp from Baltimore office, which operated briefly from April 24 thru June 30, 1845, ex Kelly (Image) E. 500-750

imageHale & Co., (6c) Blue, Street Address Omitted (75L5). Cut to shape, uncancelled, red "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Baltimore" oval handstamp struck on front and back of April 28, 1845 folded letter to New York City, this is the earliest of the series of transaction reports from the Brandreth correspondence, the sender writes "I now send by the express mail, because I get ten stamps for 50 cts. which is worth saving, if they are delivered promptly." -- Hale & Co. commenced service in Baltimore on April 24, 1845, four days before this letter was sent (the whole Hale letter-express operation was closed down on June 30th), the additional handstamp on back and absence of a cancel on the adhesive indicate that Hale's Baltimore agent was unfamiliar with procedures for cancelling mail -- Very Fine, ex Kelly (Image) E. 500-750
imageForwarded by Hale & Co. from Baltimore. Red oval handstamp clearly struck with matching Collect box on June 2, 1845 folded letter to Philadelphia, additional red "Paid" straightline handstamp, split down length of file fold and rejoined (slight staining), Very Fine strikes and rare enough to warrant proper restoration, ex Kelly (Image) E. 300-400
imageForwarded by Hale & Co. from Baltimore. Red oval handstamp struck on front and back of April 28, 1845 folded cover to Philadelphia, matching red "Paid", docketed "William Edwards, 16 South Calvert St. Baltimore MD April 28, 1845" with Edwards' pencil notation on front "Hale's carrier will please get an answer as Early as he can conveniently W.E. Agent", evidently a letter written by Hale's Baltimore Agent, William Edwards, to the president of the Girard Life Insurance Co. in Philadelphia, probably soliciting business for the new express in Baltimore -- Hale & Co. commenced service in Baltimore on April 24, 1845, four days before this letter was sent (the whole Hale letter-express operation was closed down on June 30th) -- file folds, Very Fine, a significant cover from this short-lived independent mail operation, ex Kelly (Image) E. 750-1,000
imageHale & Co. Incoming to Baltimore. Red Hale & Co. New York oval and Collect handstamp on May 17, 1845 folded cover to Baltimore, stains around address, still Fine, scarce, ex Kelly (Image) E. 150-200
