City Despatch Post. Oval
handstamp clearly struck on cover to Benj. Salter, 77 McDougall St., New
York City, pencil "2" rate, fresh and Extremely Fine, one of four recorded
covers with this oval marking, all addressed in the same hand, one of which
is dated 1858, placing this post well past the years of the Mead-Coles
operation and probably beyond Barry's involvement, see Perry's 100 Years
Ago and Jarrett article in Chronicle 122 (May 1984) for reports
of two other covers (Image) |

City Dispatch Post, New York
N.Y., 2c Red (160L1). Vertical pair, large margins to just touched at
top, deep shade, a few small faultsVERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE ONLY
RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE RARE CITY DISPATCH STAMP ON NEW YORK CITY. We
estimate that 15-20 examples of 160L1 exist. The only multiple is this
unused pair, which probably comes from a larger block reported to have been
broken into singles in the early 1900's. Ex Caspary, Lilly and
Middendorf. (Image) |

N.Y., 2c Red (160L1). Described by Perry as unused, but described as
used in Caspary and Boker sales, we see faint traces of what may be a
lightened pencil cancel, huge margins including part of adjoining stamp
below -- probably a top left corner position -- vibrant color, minute
shallow thin at bottomEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. THE FINEST OF THE
ESTIMATED 15 TO 20 EXAMPLES OF THIS RARITY KNOWN TO US. Ex Caspary and

959 |
City Dispatch Post, New York
N.Y., 2c Red (160L1). Large margins, vertical crease, affixed to 1846
folded cover and "tied" by fake "Paid" arc cancel, the red "New-York 2
cts." circular datestamp is genuine, as is the stamp itself, which is rare.
Elliott Perry and George Sloane were convinced that this cover and three
others like it, with the "Paid" in arc tying the stamp, were made by a
dealer who cut up a block and made up covers with singles -- although
Caspary and Boker both owned this cover, and our firm has sold these covers
in the past, we are now of the opinion that the four recorded "Paid" covers
are fakes. By removing the 1846 covers from the record, the date of issue
is free to be moved to circa 1850 at the end of the Mead-Coles-Barry
ownership of the City Despatch Post, a more logical time. Ex Earl of
Crawford, Caspary and Boker. (Image) |

960 |
City Dispatch Post, New York
N.Y., 2c Red (160L1). Margins all around, small but clear, ms. cancel,
affixed to small cover to local street address, sender's note "Paid"
and small pencil "2" are strong indications that someone other than the
sender delivered this to the post office, red "New-York 2 cts Mar. 17"
drop-rate circular datestamp with matching "Paid" in arc, Very Fine stamp,
the P.F. has previously declined opinion as to usage -- possibly genuine
and, if so, this is the only authentic 160L1 cover extant -- ex Hessel,
offered on its own merits (Image) |
