(Coles) City Despatch Post
Office, New York N.Y., 2c Black on Green Glazed, "C" at Left Sideways
(40L4b). Worn impression with barest trace of hand-entered "C" at left
-- previously described in Middendorf collection as "C" at Right Only
variety (40L4c) and with 1991 P.F. certificate as such -- large margins to
slightly in, faults, red "Free" in frame (not tied), matching strike with
faint "City Despatch Post P.O. Apr. 30" circular datestamp on folded cover,
which also has faults. Elliott Perry believed (and we agree) that 40L4c is
simply a worn state of the Sideways "C" at Left variety, which shows a tiny
trace of the hand-entered "C". With 1991 P.F. certificate as 40L4c. (Image) |
