  Lot Lot Description
795 imageHarriott's Broadway Post Office. Cor. Canal St. New-York. Red oval handstamp clearly struck on embossed Valentine cover to local street address, with original Valentine enclosure -- embossed illustration of romantic couple, gilt and enamel decorations -- circa 1849, faint and very minor staining, still Very Fine, this is the first handstamp used by James C. Harriott's Broadway Post Office in 1849, scarce (Image) E. 500-750
796 imageHarriott's Broadway Post Office. Cor. Canal St. New-York. Red oval handstamp with matching "Paid" straightline on cover to local street address, circa 1849, some light wrinkles and soiling, still Very Fine, scarce example of the first Broadway Post Office marking (Image) E. 200-300
797 imageHarriott's Broadway Post Office. Cor. Canal St. New-York. Red oval handstamp on folded cover to local street address, circa 1849, Fine, scarce example of the first Broadway Post Office marking (Image) E. 150-200
798 imageBroadway Post Office, Sept. 12, Cor. Canal St. New York. Red double-line oval datestamp with "418 Broadway" address deleted, mostly clear strike on 1849 folded water-rent notice from Croton Aquaduct Dept. with printed "To the Water Taker" and ms. street address, Very Fine, extremely scarce Harriott marking (Image) E. 200-300
A 799 imageBroadway Post Office, New York N.Y., (1c) Gold on Black Glazed (26L1). Ample to large margins except touched at right, uncancelled, some colored-in scrapes in surface at left, affixed to Mar. 24, 1849 folded letter with "Harriott's Broadway Post Office. Cor. Canal St. New-York" oval handstamp and "Paid" to local street address, the Broadway Post Office stamps were used beginning in 1852 -- there are two recorded genuine 26L1 covers and they do not have the early large oval handstamp (see Stimmell Penny Post article, Jul. 1995, where this cover is listed and described as "unusually early") -- still an extremely rare stamp, of which some very clever counterfeits exist (Caspary had a counterfeit on cover), offered as a genuine off-cover stamp, ex Sloane (Image) E. 1,000-1,500
A 800 imageBroadway Post Office, New York N.Y., (1c) Black (26L2). Top sheet margin block of eleven, original gum, a few stamps lightly hinged, vertical crease between stamps, horizontal crease across bottom edge, couple faint toned spot, pencil note in margin "Very scarce. The last to be had at the office."

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. REPORTED TO BE THE LARGEST SURVIVING MULTIPLE OF THE BROADWAY POST OFFICE STAMP. AN OUTSTANDING EXHIBITION ITEM.

The largest recorded block -- the ex-Jarrett block of 32 -- was divided into eight blocks of four (confirmed by photo). The next largest multiple is the block of 25 found in a desk during the early 1900's and reported in 1955 by Marie F. Craig, who was given the block by her uncle. Its current whereabouts (if intact) is unknown. This block of eleven has been considered the largest known for many years.
