Lot Sym. Lot Description Realized
1260 TC image2c Green, Large Die Trial Color Proof on India (73TC1). Die sunk on 67 x 77mm card, showing full die sinkage, No. 1030 and imprint at bottom, fresh and bright color, wonderful impression

EXTREMELY FINE AND CHOICE. ONE OF ONLY TWO EXAMPLES OF THE LARGE DIE TRIAL COLOR PROOF OF THE BLACK JACK STRUCK IN GREEN. A GREAT RARITY.

In the Allen Black Jack book (page 127), the author gives a census of colors known and numbers recorded of Black Jack trial color proofs. Two each are known in five colors: Orange, Scarlet, Green, Brown and Brownish Yellow. Brazer believed that only one example in Dark Blue exists. There are eight distinct colors contained in the Finkelburg Collection -- it is likely that some of these are unique.

The rarity of the Black Jack large die trial color proofs is further demonstrated by the fact that none was contained in either the Allen, Brazer or Rorke collection. The entire offering from the Finkelburg Collection was puchased from John A. Klemann in 1936, and has not been offered to the market since (Image)
