backstampVERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING COVER BOOTLEGGED FROM CANADA AND PLACED IN THE UNITED STATES MAILS FOR CARRIAGE TO ENGLAND. POSSIBLY A UNIQUE USAGE. The cover was carried outside of the mails from Canada and given to the railroad route agent in Boston. The 5c U.S. postage paid the rate for 300 miles or less, applicable from Boston to New York. Louisville Ky. and sent to Bremen, Germany, bold red "STEAM" handstamp,
ms. "1/4" and red crayon "40" due markings, Liverpool transit backstamp,
endorsed "Pr first Steamer via Liverpool and Ostende", light file
fold clear of stamp, the stamp with very slight negligible
creasingEXTREMELY FINE. A RARE AND UNUSUAL USE OF THE 1847 ISSUE ON A BRITISH PACKET COVER TO GERMANY VIA BREMERHAVEN. This cover originated in Louisville and was carried by steamboat up river to Cincinnati, where it entered the mails ("Steam handstamp apoplied there). The cover went by mail to New York City and was carried to Bremerhaven by a British Packet via Liverpool.
