38 7 1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Pos. 10R1E, huge margins all around showing sheet margin at top and right and part of adjacent stamp at left, also showing significant portion of adjacent stamp at bottom, beautiful rich Plate 1E color, neat blue Charleston S.C. datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE AND CHOICE GEM. THIS POSITION IS THE ONLY TYPE II STAMP ON PLATE 1E WITH THE DESIGN COMPLETE AT TOP. A GREAT CONDITION AND POSITION RARITY.

Other Type II stamps on Plate 1 Early and other plates (except Plate 4) show the design partly missing the ornaments at top. The only other Ty. II stamps with the designs complete at top come from the top row only of Plate 4

$ 3,500
39 7 1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Pos. 5R4, large margins all around showing sheet margin at T. and trace of adjacent stamps at L. and B., neat ms. cancels

EXTREMELY FINE. A SCARCE TYPE II STAMP FROM THE TOP ROW OF PLATE 4.

Neinken states on page 269 of his 1c book that [top row Type II stamps] "are unquestionably the finest examples of this type...a Type II from the top row of plate 4 is practically as scarce a stamp as a Type Ia, imperforate or perforated."

$ 3,500
40 7 1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Pos. 1R4, full margins all around, very light cancel, rich color, small sealed tear at T., otherwise Very Fine and scarce Type II top row stamp (see previous lot) $ 850
41 S 20 1c Blue, Ty. II (20). Pair and two singles which form a horizontal strip of four, Positions 6-9R4 showing the complete design at top, and wide-spaced perforations, right stamps the pair, others joined with tiny hinge slivers, all are o.g., h.r., wide-spaced horizontal perf rows well clear of the design at top and bottom, centered to right, few minor toned spots and small corner crease at far right

VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY CHOICE AND RARE ORIGINAL-GUM MULTIPLE SHOWING THE WIDE-SPACED PERFORATIONS ON THE TOP ROW OF PLATE 4.

The Neinken One-cent book (p. 279) describes the uneven layout of Plate 4, with the top and bottom rows somewhat further apart than the other eight rows of the plate. This irregularity resulted in perfs cutting into the designs of the top or bottom rows. For a short time the perforation machine was reset with wide spacing between the two last horizontal rows of perfs. Only bottom row (Ty. Ia) and top row (Ty. II) stamps from Plate 4 come with extra-wide top and bottom margins. If the sheet was fed in one direction, Type Ia wide-spacing stamps resulted. In the opposite direction, Type II wide-spaced stamps were produced. The Scott Catalogue footnote after No. 19 (Ty. Ia) describes this characteristic, but it is not noted after No. 20 from Plate 4.

The perforated Type II stamps from Plate 4 are very rare - the Scott Catalogue does not give a price for unused, the used value is $800.00. The comparably rare Type Ia Plate 4 stamp is priced at $4,000.00 used and $15,000.00 with original gum (a factor of 3.75). Applying the same multiple to the $800.00 used value for a Type II Plate 4 stamp, a single with original gum should have a catalogue value of $3,000.00. Therefore, the estimated catalogue value of this multiple, without any premium for the pair or wide-spacing variety, is $12,000.00.

An important and wonderfully rare 1c 1857 item

$ 7,500
42 (S) 20 1c Blue, Ty. II (20). Pos. 10R4 showing double transfer most noticeable in the lettering at top, unused (no gum), well-centered for this usually narrowly-spaced stamp, perfs scissors-separated, tiny thin speck

VERY FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE. THIS IS THE ONLY POSITION ON PLATE 4 THAT SHOWS A DOUBLE TRANSFER. ONE OF THE SCARCEST DOUBLE TRANSFERS OF THE ONE-CENT 1851-57 ISSUE.

This position was the first laid down on the plate. The double transfer indicates that there was some difficulty in entering this first transfer. Neinken states that he had only seen one imperforate and six perforated copies, and only one pair, containing this position. Unpriced as unused in Scott
