10c Black (2). Right sheet margin and large margins all around, deep shade and fine early impression, affixed upside down and tied by three strikes of red "Paid" hs and matching "Charleston S.C. Feb. 14/10" Valentine's Day cds on
blue folded cover to Ludlow Beebee & Co. in Philadelphia, Extremely Fine Gem stamp and cover. Although stamps were relatively new to the American public and this letter is addressed to a commercial firm, the date of this mailing, Valentine's Day, and
the extremely unusual upside-down placement of the 10c Washington stamp lead us to the romantic speculation that the sender was familiar with the custom of affixing a postage stamp upside down to convey a message of love and affection. The 10c 1847
