85° c 3c Dull Red, Ty. IIa, Imperforate Vertically (Unlisted 26a Variety). Horizontal strip of three, centered slightly to bottom, tied by black large "Paid" grids and red "Boston Ms. Apr. 20, 1859" cds on cover to St. Louis, left stamp has sealed tear, minor edge nicks and tears have been expertly improved, Very Fine appearance. One other Type IIa Imperforate Vertically stamp is known, it is the single offered in our sale of the Piller collection (Sale 748), where it was described as the only known example - specialists were then unaware that this strip is Type IIa, not Type II. We sold this cover in our 1996 Rarities sale as the Scott-listed No. 26b, the Type II variety, because Scott did not (and still does not) list the Type IIa Imperforate Vertically
